Description and Purpose of Page

When you click on the Launch STARS button on the main STARS page, a new window pops up in which STARS will run. A smaller pop-up window is also used to view Help screens while using STARS.

If you click on the Launch STARS button and nothing seems to happen, you may have pop-ups blocked on your web browser. The information below on allowing pop-ups was collected from various sites on the Internet and all resources are included at the end of the page. You may also want to insure that JavaScript is enabled for your browser by following these Javascript enabling instructions.

It is not recommended to turn off your Pop-up blockers as these can prevent annoying advertisements and potential security risks. The instructions below will assist in allowing the STARS pages to be viewed while still blocking unwanted pop-ups from other sites.

Specific Instructions For Each Type of Browser

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer
  • On the Internet Explorer main Tool bar click on Tools
  • Choose Pop-up Blocker from the drop down menu
    • If Turn On Pop-up Blocker is available, choose this to turn-on the pop-up blocker
    • Choose Pop-up Blocker Settings
  • Type in "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) for Address of Web site to allow
  • Click the Add button
  • Click the Close button
    It is reported that the Mac version of Internet Explorer does not have a pop-up blocker.

Netscape
  • On the Netscape main Tool bar click on Tools
  • For Netscape 8
    • Choose Options from the drop down menu
    • Choose Site Controls from the displayed menu
    • Click on Add Site under My Settings
    • Enter "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) in domain name and change Initial Trust Setting to "I trust this site"
    • Click on Add Site to close the add site window
    • Click on OK to save your settings
  • For Netscape 7
    • Choose Pop-up Manager from the drop down menu
    • Select Manage Pop-ups
    • Enter "www.wiu.edu" (without quotes) in the field provided
    • Click on Add to add this to the allowed list of sites
    • Click OK to save your settings

  • Windows
    • On the FireFox main Tool bar click on Tools
    • Choose Options from the drop down menu
    • Choose Content from the Options Menu
    • Check the box next to Block Popup Windows
    • Click on Allowed Sites
    • Type in "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) for Address of web site
    • Click Allow to add this to the list of allowed sites
    • Click on Close to save the settings
  • Mac
    • Go to the Firefox menu (to the right of the Apple menu) and select Preferences
    • Check the box for "Block Pop-up Windows"
    • Click on "Allowed Sites"
    • Add "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) to the list of allowed sites

  • On the Mozilla main Tool bar click on Edit
  • Choose Preferences from the drop down menu
  • If not already expanded, click the + next to Privacy & Security in the outline on the left
  • Click on Popup Windows
  • Make sure the box nex to Block unrequested popup windows is checked
  • Click on Allowed sites
  • Type in "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) in the space provided below Allow popups from the following web sites
  • Click Add to add this site to the list of allowed web sites
  • Click OK to save these settings
  • Click OK to close the Preferences menu

  • While displaying the STARS launch page click on the pop-up control displayed at the bottom of the window
  • Follow the instructions for allowing pop-ups from that site
  • To change pop-up preferences overall:
    • Sign on to AOL
    • On the AOL Toolbar click Settings
    • Choose Preferences
    • Choose the By AOL Feature tab
    • Scroll down and click on Pop-ups
    • Follow the instructions to enter "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) for the address of the site to allow

  • On the Opera main Tool bar click on Tools
  • Choose Quick Preferences from the drop down menu
  • Make sure the option for Block Unwanted Pop-ups is selected
    • If there is not a mark next to it click on Block Unwanted Pop-ups
    • The Tools menu will have closed so open it again by clicking on Tools
    • Choose Quick Preferences from the drop down menu again
  • Choose Edit Site Preferences
  • Select the General tab
  • Enter "mvs.wiu.edu" (without the quotes) for the Site
  • Choose Open all pop-ups from the Pop-ups drop down
  • Click on OK to save these settings

  • Go to the Safari menu (to the right of the Apple menu)
  • Select "Block Pop-Up Windows" to uncheck and disable the pop-up blocker
    • Note: Safari does not have a way to add site exceptions so the pop-up blocker is either on or off.

MSN Toolbar
  • If the Pop-up Guard button does not appear in the MSN Toolbar, show it by doing the following
    • Click Select msn menu
    • Select Toolbar Options
    • On the Toolbar Buttons tab make sure the checkbox next to Pop-up Guard is checked
  • You can turn the pop-up blocker on and off by clicking the Pop-up Guard button on the MSN Toolbar
  • Click the Menu widget to the right of the Pop-up Guard button
  • Click Pop-up Guard Settings
  • Click the Allow List tab
  • Enter "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) in the text box
  • Click Add to add this site to the list of allowed sites

  • On the Yahoo! Toolbar for Internet Explorer, click the Pop-Up Blocker menu
  • Select "Always Allow Pop-Ups From"

    • Display the STARS launch page
    • If the EarthLink Pop-Up Blocker buttons are not on the Internet Explorer tool bar
      • Right-click the Internet Explorer tool bar
      • Click Pop-Up Blocker to show the EarthLink buttons
    • Click the Pop-Up Blocker menu button
    • Choose Always ALLOW pop-ups for this Web site from the displayed menu
  • Panicware Pop-Up Stopper
    • The Pop-Up Stopper free version does not have an allowed sites feature
    • The Pop-Up Stopper Professional has an allow list
      • Right-click the Pop-Up Stopper Professional icon
      • Choose Preferences
      • Choose Allowed Pop-ups
      • Add "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) to the list of allowed sites
    • The Pop-Up Stopper Basic and Companion Toolbars also have allow lists
      • Activate the pop-up control by clicking the pop-up control button on the toolbar
      • Add "mvs.wiu.edu" (without quotes) to the list of allowed web sites
  • Ultimate Pop-up Killer
    • Right-click the icon on the bottom of the screen (the red and white "target" icon in the task bar)
    • Click the "allow popups" icon

Many pop-up blockers will allow you to open a blocked pop-up by holding down on the CTRL key when you click on the link. Although it is advisable to modify the blocker to allow mvs.wiu.edu, this method can work if needed.
