Description and Purpose of Page

Several pages within the STARS system use JavaScript commands to open windows and to provide other needed functions. For STARS to operate properly you need to make sure JavaScript is enabled on your computer. The instructions below are for some of the common browsers used today. For additional information please check Help within your browser or search for "enabling javascript" with your favorite search engine.

Specific Instructions For Each Type of Browser

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer Instructions
These instructions listed cover Internet Explorer version 6.0. Although the instructions may vary somewhat, similar changes are applicable to other versions of Internet Explorer.
  1. With the browser open, click on Tools on the toolbar to open the drop down menu
  2. Click on Internet Options from the drop down menu to open the Internet Options dialogue
  3. Click on the Security tab at the top of the Internet Options window
  4. Click on the Trusted Sites icon at the top of the Security page
  5. Click on the Sites button to open the Trusted Sites dialog
  6. Enter "mvs.wiu.edu" in the area for Add this Web site to the zone
  7. Click the Add button to add this to the list of trusted sites
  8. Click OK to close the Trusted Sites Dialog
  9. Click on the Custom Level button at the bottom of the Security page
  10. In the Security Settings window that pops up, scroll down near the bottom to the section for Scripting
  11. Make sure the radio button next to Enable is selected for Active Scripting
  12. Click the OK button at the bottom of the Security Settings window to save any changes you may have made
  13. If a warning window appears asking "Are you sure you want to change the Security Settings for this zone?", click the Yes button to close this warning and update the values
  14. Click the OK button at the bottom of the Internet Options window to close that window
  15. Close all browser windows and restart your browser to make sure the changes take affect
  16. If using Windows XP, some resources suggest restarting Windows to make sure changes take affect

Firefox

Firefox Instructions
  1. With the browser open, click on Tools on the toolbar to open the drop down menu
  2. Click on Options to open the Options dialog
  3. Click on the Content icon at the top of the Options window
  4. Make sure the check box next to Enable JavaScript is checked
  5. Click OK to save your settings and close the Options window
  6. Close all browser windows and restart your browser to make sure the changes take affect

Netscape

Netscape Instructions
  • Netscape 8.x
    1. With the browser open, click on Tools on the toolbar to open the drop down menu.
    2. Choose Options to open the Options menu
    3. Under Security and Privacy click on Site Controls
    4. Under Web Features on the right make sure the check box next to Enable JavaScript is checked
    5. Click OK to save your settings and exit the Options menu
    6. Close all browser windows and restart your browser to make sure the changes take affect
  • Netscape 7.x and earlier versions
    1. With the browser open, click on Edit on the toolbar to open the drop down menu
    2. Click on Preferences from the drop down menu to open the preferences dialogue
    3. Click on the Advanced category at the bottom of the left frame of the preferences dialogue
    4. For Netscape 7.x users click on the Scripts and Plug-ins entry under Advanced
    5. Make sure the check box next to Enable JavaScript is checked in the frame on the right (enable for Navigator for 7.x users)
    6. Click the OK to save your changes and close the Preferences window
    7. Close all browser windows and restart your browser to make sure the changes take affect

Mozilla

Mozilla Instructions
The Mozilla browser uses the same instructions to enable Javascript as the instructions for Firefox users.

AOL

AOL Instructions
These instructions are for AOL version 9.0
  1. With the AOL browser open, click on Safety tab and choose Settings   - OR -
  2. Click on the Settings Icon to display the Settings Main window
  3. If not already displayed, click on the Index tab to display an index of AOL settings
  4. Find and click on Internet ÝWeb¨ Options to open the Browser Settings window
  5. From the Browser Settings window that displays, click on Internet Explorer Settings under Related Settings in the right-hand frame to open the Internet Options window
  6. Continue with Steps 3 through 16 of the instructions for Internet Explorer
  7. If you have a version of AOL other than 9.0 and the above steps do not work, open the Internet Options window as follows (Windows users):
    • Click on the Windows Start button
    • Click on Control Panel
      • Some display options for Windows require that you click on Settings to see the choice for Control Panel
    • From the Control Panel choose Internet Options
    • Continue with Steps 3 through 16 of the instructions for Internet Explorer

Opera

Opera Instructions
These instructions are for Opera version 9.0
  1. With the Opera browser open, click on Tools on the toolbar to open the drop down menu
  2. Click on Preferences to open the Preferences dialog
  3. Click on the Advanced tab
  4. Choose Content from the menu items listed on the left side of the window
  5. Make sure the checkbox next to Enable JavaScript is checked
  6. Click OK to save your settings and close the Preferences dialog
  7. Close all browser windows and restart your browser to make sure the changes take affect

Safari

Safari Instructions
  1. Select Preferences from the Safari menu to open the Preferences Internet Options dialog
  2. Select the Security tab
  3. Under the Web Content section make sure the checkbox next to Enable JavaScript is checked
  4. Close the Preferences Internet Options dialog
  5. Close all browser windows and restart your browser to make sure the changes take affect
